training for communication

People want to hear from you. Get ready.

In today’s fast-moving, information-driven world, keeping quiet and carrying on is not an option.

People want to hear from you. People want to know who you are, what you do and what you stand for. If they don’t know, then they won’t get involved. They won’t do the things that you’d like them to do.

A good story is at the heart of any communication strategy. Telling your story is central to your success. At Department T our years of experience of telling stories – to all sorts of different people – have taught us that it’s sometimes easier said, than done.

So we made it our job to simplify the process. We want to give you the tools to do it yourself.

Stories are integral to successful, results-oriented communication and we’ll show you why. We’ll show you ways of identifying stories in your organisation and how to build the story around the five or six things that people want to hear – taking into account that different people may want to hear different things. Of course, in today’s world of information overload, there are many ways of getting your story across, and we’ll help you decide what’s right for you.

Writing To Communicate

Clear and concise writing is the key to getting your story across in paid, earned, social and owned (PESO) media. We’ll give you guidance on structure, on length, on use of language and the importance of proofing your copy. We’ll help you separate the wheat from the chaff, see the wood for the trees and deliver something that people want to read and the media want to use. We’ll also talk about tone of voice and consistency across all of your communication.

Working With The Media

Not just media training – although we’ll provide advice and practical instruction for interview situations. This is about understanding what the media want and how best to give it to them, when they need it. We’ll discuss the changing media landscape, and the things you can do to make the journalist’s job easier. We’ll also share some ideas around photography and video and infographics – things that can help your story stand out.

We can help you work on preparation, delivery and your personal style, improving your performance and helping you tell your story more effectively. Whether you’re talking to an audience of your employees, or to an auditorium full of stakeholders and influencers, if you’re going to do it, do it with impact, authority and authenticity.

Crisis & Issue management

We’ll explain the difference between issue and crisis (one you watch, one you deal with), and we’ll tell you why they’re both important to you. We’ll help you prepare for both. We’ll discuss the anatomy of a crisis – what you can expect to happen, and in what order – and how you might deal with itwhat you need to do, when and who with. And we’ll ask ‘what does success look like’ – if you handle a crisis really well, what’s the best result you – and your bosses/shareholders/owners – can expect?
